The French Minister of Culture decided in 1982 to make a Day for Music. It became the 21st of June. Now it already spread into more than 50 countries.

The ZKM | Institute for Music and Acoustics is featuring the AML, which is an interactive sound installation.
It can be visited until the 6jan2009 and is located in the ‘Zentrum für Kunst und Medientechnologie’ in Karlsruhe, Germany.

It is about the changes sound makes in different spaces. Since it is interactive it is quite fun. AML stands for Architecture Music Laboratory.

eme3 is a festival in which architecture interacts with other scientific and creative disciplines, adopting and reinterpreting their structures. eme3 is the environment expressed in cubic meters, where proposals, fruit of the research of space, interact with one another and who’s cohabitation in a common setting motors an exchange dynamic.

eme3 is a provider of stages for expressing ideas, providing the creator with an actual interactive space and offering the promoter an appointment to explore emergent architecture.

I would like to highlite the article on ‘Community Radio Social Impact Assessement – Removing Barriers, Increasing Effectiveness’.

In the StadtBauWelt 176 (21dec2007) I read an interesting article from Rober Neuwirth. The title in German is ‘”… um nie wieder die Rückseite der Stadt zu verachten …”‘ (= ” … to never disregard the back side of the city …”).

Kibera (southwest of Nairobi, Kenia) has no water, no disposal or sanitation but a good working commercial structure: supermarkets, clinics, hair dressers, schools, telephone exchange, and churches.
The inhabitants represent all social classes. Squatters are economically, politically and socially as assorted as any other residential zone.

03 Squatters are enemies of the civilised society and are disapproving of being a part of it
First precondition is a waranty against arbitrary expulsion. Because than they start to invest and make the best of it.
Second precondition is an access to politics or public organs.

In the same edition you can read an article about the contradictory geography of the favela (=’Die widersprüchjliche Geographie der Favela’) by Daniela Fabricius. She gives an overview on ‘Rocinha – the favela as a town’, ‘Providencia – Rio’s oldest favela’, and explains some facts like:
gatos (=cats) < an inofficial and most of the time illegal branch connection to water, electricity, phone, TV >
Vans (=shuttle bus) < the inofficial public transport > In Mexico City they displaced the public transport.

I think these two articles show the independency of these home grown urban spaces. We shouldn’t show up there offering solutions for everything. We had this during colonization time and we know the end of the story.

Jahrhundertealte Denkmuster der Gutenberg-Galaxie werden durch die Digitalisierung auf den Kopf gestellt, und die rasenden Geschwindigkeiten der neuen Medien verwirren unsere Sinne – im basisdemokratischen Internet scheint nichts mehr das zu sein, was es einmal war.

Auch wenn das Internet eine neue Chance für “Nischenprodukte statt Massenmarkt” (Chris Anderson) bietet: Große Medienkonzerne der ‘Creative Industries’ könnten das Netz ebenso gut in einen finsteren Kerker neofeudaler Abhängigkeiten verwandeln, mit undurchsichtigen und erpresserischen Geschäftsbedingungen und horrenden Urheberrechtsklagen, die auf ‘geistiges Eigentum’ pochen.
